Jason Baker from Jamestown hit the nail on the head in his recent letter to the editor to the city’s Post-Journal.
The proposed cuts to education in Jamestown are alarming. Difficult decisions need to be made in such a tough economic climate. However, the district’s library department was utterly destroyed by the cuts.
Just like the funding attacks on public libraries, school libraries are seen an expendable. But, as Baker points out, school librarians are also teachers and their work is invaluable for our children and their academic achievement.
Jamestown School District has 1o schools and nine school librarians. The cuts will mean there will be only two librarians to cover the city’s six elementary schools. That math just doesn’t add up!
