Last week, Denny Farrell (D-Manhattan) took to the floor of the Assembly to talk about the budget. In a rather off-handed remark, he dissed libraries.

The fact of the matter is we will always need libraries–especially in this economy. Let Assembly Farrell, who is also the Chair of the Assembly Ways and Means Committee, that the best apology he can make is by restoring $4.2 million in Library Aid in the state budget. “…when we pay this 8.8 billion $ in debt, but he forgot to mention that if we did not make these loans, the schools that are in his district, our district, would not have been built. And those schools were built with the approval of the school boards, and sometimes the voters, when they them. Those bonds are what we are paying for now.
Hospitals in your district, that are taking care of people, those bonds are in here also.
There are things like waste water, safe drinking. When you drink water, the one thing we know, you can go to the tap, you really don’t have to spend money on that bottle, you can drink it and it won’t poison you, we’re paying to make sure that happens here.
Libraries, we really don’t need them anymore, maybe. But we did need them, for now computers have taken their place. But now we have to pay for what we did, and for the libraries that those children in your schools are not using.
So you’re really not paying for nothing, you’re getting a good program…”
